A residential front fence can be up to 1.8 m high, measured from natural ground level on the street side. The solid portion can be up to 1.2 m, and the section above that needs to be visually open. A fence that doesn’t meet those limits needs approval from the City. A building permit is also needed for a masonry fence over 750 mm, or for a fence made of other materials over 1.8 m. Dividing fences are mainly a matter between neighbours under the Dividing Fences Act 1961: you generally share the reasonable cost of a sufficient fence equally, and a written agreement takes priority. The City of Wanneroo also has a fencing local law that sets the standard for a sufficient fence. See the Building and Energy guide.

Cost depends on the length and height of the fence, the colour, the number of gates, whether an old fence needs removing, and the ground and site access. Larger Wanneroo lots can mean long runs, so we give a fixed-price quote after measuring instead of quoting a flat rate. Check that any quote you compare includes removal, posts, gates and clean-up.
